Canada Reels From Mass School Shooting.
A transgender 18-year-old former student killed eight people and wounded roughly 25 others in one of Canada's deadliest mass shootings, police said, striking a small British Columbia town of about 2,400 people.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police identified the shooter on Wednesday as Jesse Van Rootselaar, who fatally shot a 39-year-old woman believed to be his mother and an 11-year-old stepbrother at home before storming Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, where more were killed. The school victims included five students, ages 12 to 13, and a female teacher.
Police said they had visited the family home multiple times over mental health concerns and had previously seized firearms. Van Rootselaar dropped out of school about four years ago and died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
FAA Closing of El Paso Airspace Quickly Reversed.
The Federal Aviation Administration abruptly closed all airspace over El Paso International Airport early Wednesday for "special security reasons," then lifted the order hours later in a sequence that grounded about 40 departures.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the Department of War "acted swiftly to address a cartel drone incursion" near the border city, though multiple sources said that the closure may have stemmed from a dispute between the FAA and Pentagon over testing high-energy laser counter-drone technology at nearby Fort Bliss.
El Paso Mayor Renard Johnson called the shutdown "unacceptable," saying medical evacuation flights were diverted and a plane carrying surgical equipment from Dallas never arrived. The airport, served by Southwest, American, United, Delta, and Frontier, had not been closed for security reasons since September 11, 2001.
Reports say the FAA administrator announced the airspace was being closed for 10 days without alerting the White House, Pentagon, or Homeland Security, and the restriction was lifted minutes after it was discussed in a morning meeting in the chief of staff's office.
Gallup Ends Presidential Approval Tracking.
Gallup confirmed Wednesday it will no longer publish presidential approval ratings after tracking the measure for 88 years, ending one of the most widely cited barometers of White House performance.
The analytics firm, founded in 1935, began polling Americans on presidential job performance in 1938 and said the decision "reflects an evolution in how Gallup focuses its public research." The company said the shift was "solely based on Gallup's research goals and priorities."
President Trump has threatened legal action against pollsters publishing unfavorable findings, though Gallup did not attribute its decision to outside pressure.

I will repeat the Trivia Question for today: Which fashion accessory sparked a series of riots in New York during the fall of 1922?
And the answer is: he Straw Hat Riots of 1922 lasted eight days and involved fights among boys and men on the streets of New York, causing injuries and jail time. In the early 1900s, it was customary for men to wear straw hats from May 15 (Straw Hat Day) until September 15 (Felt Hat Day). Wearing a straw hat outside these dates was considered a breach of etiquette. As summer ended, men would often playfully smash each other’s hats to mark the occasion. In 1922, gangs of young boys began stealing and destroying hats, leading to mob confrontations that created widespread chaos in the streets.

The six-lane bridge, approved in 2014 and expected to open early this year, was financed and built by Canada. Trump said the Obama administration granted a waiver exempting the project from Buy American requirements, allowing Canada to build it "with virtually no U.S. content, including our steel."

The federal Small Business Administration suspended more than 111,000 California borrowers after uncovering 8.6 billion dollars in suspected fraudulent activity linked to the COVID pandemic, according to S B A Administrator Kelly Loeffler.
They are accused of collecting money under the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program from the federal government that were supposed to ease the economic burden from COVID.
Loeffler said, “Once again, the Trump S B A is taking decisive action to deliver accountability in a state whose unaccountable welfare policies have created a culture of fraud and abuse at the expense of law-abiding taxpayers and small business owners.”
The S B A moves follow recent action in Minnesota, where the agency suspended 6,900 borrowers with potentially fraudulent PPP and EIDL loans worth approximately 400 million dollars.

The Seattle Seahawks meet the New England Patriots today in Super Bowl 60, TV’s biggest viewing day of the year, and a national bonanza for companies that make pizza, wings, and TV commercials.

What Ever Happened to ...
Whatever happened to hitchhiking?
Hitchhiking in old photos carries an unmistakable sense of nostalgia: a kid on the shoulder of a highway, thumb out, a cardboard sign reading West, a throwback to a simpler, more innocent time. For much of the 20th century, that little gesture served as a kind of informal transportation system—part necessity, part romance, part social contract.
That era is long gone now, having reached its peak during the 1960s and 70s. But it actually began as soon as cars were common enough that spare seats existed. The word “hitchhike” began circulating in the 1920s, and by the 1930s—thanks to the Great Depression—the practice had gone mainstream.
Money was tight, people were on the move looking for work, and a ride offered to a stranger could feel less like risk and more like mutual aid. During World War 2, it even gained a patriotic sheen: soldiers traveled, fuel was rationed, and sharing the road looked like doing your part.
Then the meaning changed. In the 1960s and early 1970s, hitchhiking became less about hardship and more about freedom—“thumb tripping” as a countercultural rite, a cheap ticket to protests, communes, concerts, and the general promise that America was one long open road. It’s hard to imagine now, but for a while, the roadside stranger could plausibly register as a friend you just hadn’t met yet.
And then the end came. More people owned cars, highways got faster and more controlled-access, and standing on a shoulder became both harder and, in many places, illegal. Meanwhile, the culture flipped from “we’re in this together” to “don’t talk to strangers.” Law enforcement campaigns and sensational stories about violent outliers turned the hitchhiker into a potential outlaw from a cautionary poster.
Today, the need is smaller, the infrastructure is hostile, and trust has been replaced by apps. Today, if you’re going to ride with a stranger, you want a profile photo, a license plate, and a payment receipt.

The Flyover Replay.
Saturday, February 7, 2026.
Good morning! On this day in 1904, a discarded cigarette in Baltimore’s business district ignited the Great Baltimore Fire, which burned for 31 hours and destroyed 80 blocks. Officials reported that 1,500 buildings were lost, but fortunately, there were no fatalities.
Today, as promised, The Flyover introduces its 2026 Winter Olympics special section as Friday’s opening ceremony unfolded in Italy. This is where you can keep up with daily news from the Olympics, including the athletes, events, and even an ongoing medal count for U.S. teams. You’ll find it just past the Sports section in today’s edition.
Housekeeping note: The Flyover team had a great annual meeting this week, and the team is now heading back to their home states to resume publishing our national and state publications. Today’s issue is abbreviated due to meetings and travel, but we’ll be back to our full-length editions on Sunday.
We hope you enjoyed reading today's Flyover. Let us know how we're doing by replying to Russell Sherrard at russellsherrard@reagan.com.

Trump Officially Unveils TrumpRx.gov.
President Trump on February 5th launched TrumpRx.gov, a government-backed site offering 40 discounted prescription drugs to Americans paying cash, calling it a major step to curb U S price disparities nationwide.
The administration says “most-favored-nation” deals with 16 major drugmakers will bring U.S. prices down to the lowest paid abroad, cutting Medicaid costs for cash buyers, too.
TrumpRx lists about 40 drugs, showing savings and generating pharmacy coupons or directing users to mail-order options. Discounts do not apply to insurance and generally won’t count toward deductibles today.
Officials highlighted lower prices for GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, inhalers, HIV, diabetes, and IVF medications. Experts praised the one-stop coupon hub, but noted the list is limited and savings vary overall.
Three fans, 60 Years of Super Bowls.
Three lifelong football fans—the last remaining members of the “never missed a Super Bowl” club dating back to Super Bowl I in 1967—are returning this Sunday for the 2026 game, and it will probably be the last time as a group.
Don Crisman of Maine, nearing 90, and Tom Henschel of Florida, 84 and recovering from a stroke, said this trip will likely end their streaks at 60 straight Super Bowls.
Gregory Eaton of Michigan, 86, says he plans to keep attending as long as he’s physically able, still hoping to one day see the Detroit Lions reach the game. He remains the only one still working.
“I think all of them are big, they’re all fun. It’s just gotten so commercial. It’s a $10,000 trip now,” Eaton said.

I will repeat the Trivia Question for today: Why is President Franklin D Roosevelt’s picture on the dime?
And the answer is: President Franklin D. Roosevelt, a polio sufferer, helped establish the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis to fund research for a polio vaccine. In 1938, entertainer Eddie Cantor humorously encouraged Americans to send dimes to support the cause, leading to 2,680,000 dimes arriving at the White House. This surge of support from both individuals and celebrities prompted the organization to be renamed the March of Dimes Foundation. After Roosevelt’s death in 1945, Louisiana Representative James Hobson Morrison introduced legislation for the Roosevelt dime.

Winter Olympics Officially Open Today.
The 2026 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony kicks off today in Italy in the most far-flung Winter Games ever, with roughly 250 miles between Milan’s arenas and Cortina’s mountain venues.
Tonight’s opening ceremony will take place at Milan’s San Siro Stadium, repurposed from a soccer venue to host the event. The musical extravaganza is expected to draw about 60,000 live spectators.
The live broadcast window runs 2-5 p m Eastern Time for U S viewers, putting all the pageantry right into the middle of the workday.
Americans have participated in every Winter Olympics since the very first in 1924, piling up 330 total medals and 114 gold ones over the last century.
Team U S A has found the podium in almost every sport in the Winter Olympics (we’ve never won a medal in biathlon), but the Games this year added a brand-new event in ski mountaineering, an event no one has yet won.
Stocks Slide as Tech and Bitcoin Fall.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled Thursday as a sharp sell-off in big tech rattled Wall Street, with Amazon plunging 10 percent in after-hours trading after it estimated roughly 200 billion dollars in future spending.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq took the brunt of the damage, dragged down by fears that massive artificial intelligence investments are pushing profitability out further than investors expected.
Bitcoin slid about 13 percent, falling below 64,000 dollars for the first time since late 2024, as investors pulled back from riskier assets and doubts grew about crypto’s role as a safe haven.
Analysts said heavy liquidations and institutional selling are accelerating the move, tying the cryptocurrency slump more tightly to the broader tech-led market rout.
Car Insurance Costs Drop Nationally.
Car insurance prices fell 6 percent nationally in 2025 to an average of 2,144 dollars for full coverage after surging 46% from 2022 to 2024, according to a new analysis.
Some states saw dramatic relief with Wyoming dropping 30 percent, Iowa falling 25 percent and Arkansas declining 23 percent. However, 10 states bucked the trend with New Jersey rising 20% and Washington, D C, climbing 18 percent to become the nation's most expensive city for full-coverage insurance at an average of 4,017 dollars annually.
Analysts said insurers' improved financial margins now allow them to cut rates and compete for customers. The report projects a modest 1 percent national increase in 2026.

I will repeat the Trivia Question for today: How did people remove pencil marks before the rubber eraser?
And the answer is: In the absence of rubber erasers, which weren’t widely available until the 19th century, people often used bread to remove pencil marks. Thick, soft bread was excellent at picking up graphite from the paper. By simply rolling or pressing the bread over the unwanted pencil mark, the graphite adhered to the bread’s surface, leaving the paper clean.

700 Ice Agents Are Leaving Minnesota.
Border czar Tom Homan announced Wednesday the Trump administration will withdraw 700 federal immigration officers from Minnesota effective immediately, leaving about 2,000 agents in the state.
Homan announced the 25 percent reduction after touting "unprecedented cooperation" from Minnesota county jails to transfer immigration suspects to Ice before release.
President Trump said he learned the administration could use "a little bit of a softer touch" on immigration enforcement following the backlash.
The partial drawdown comes after federal agents killed two U S citizens during separate January altercations in Minneapolis. The Department of Homeland Security initially defended the killings before the administration moderated its tone as public opinion soured.
Washington Post Cuts One-Third of Staff.
The Washington Post laid off roughly one-third of its employees on Wednesday in what former executive editor Martin Baron described as one of the darkest days in the newspaper's 150-year history.

Minute Maid Ends Frozen Juice Era.
Minute Maid is discontinuing its frozen juice concentrates after 80 years, ending production of the iconic canned juices that became an American breakfast staple for generations of families.
The Coca-Cola Company cited shifting consumer preferences as the reason for phasing out flavors including orange juice, lemonade, limeade, pink lemonade, and raspberry lemonade by April.
The frozen concentrate originated during World War 2 as an alternative to lemon crystals given to soldiers for vitamin C, launching the Minute Maid brand in 1946.
Nostalgic fans flooded social media with memories of watching parents mix the frozen slush or eating it straight from the can. The company said it will focus on ready-to-drink beverages as American tastes shift away from frozen concentrates.
